Reglan Tardive Dyskinesia: More than Patients Bargained For

Reglan, a drug prescribed to help speed digestion particularly in diabetes and cancer patients, has recently come under fire for the barrage of side effects afflicting patients who have taken the drug. Many of these side effects are neurological, and some of them are permanent – tardive dyskinesia, cervical dystonia, akathisia, and blepharospasm are all movement-related disorders that have been associated with the drug.

Reglan works by contracting the muscles in the digestive system in order to speed up the digestion process in patients who are unable to digest normally. However, the spasms seem to have a way of affecting muscles they are not intended to touch – the resulting side effects are not only physically uncomfortable, they are noticeable and often embarrassing, awkward, or grotesque. This leads to not only physical pain being experienced by the victims but emotional pain as well.

The Food and Drug Administration chose to put a “black box” warning in place in regards to Reglan, which is the highest warning they can give short of initiating a recall. Tardive dyskinesia, in particular, has been experienced in a disproportionate number of Reglan patients, with some of the subsets of tardive dyskinesia being present as well: orofacial dyskinesia, which affects the muscles in the face; cervical dystonia, which causes neck spasms that can interfere with a person’s ability to work; and blepharospasm/ocular deviation, both conditions which affect the eyes and even, in some cases, can cause blindness.

Although Reglan is still FDA-approved for short-term use where other medications have not proved successful, many victims of the more serious Reglan side effects have shown themselves in patients who had been taking the medication for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, there is no treatment and no cure for tardive dyskinesia, and it is a permanent condition that affects between 250,000 and 400,000 people in the United States.
